The Lovecraft Investigations, BBC radio 4

The Lovecraft Investigations is a BBC production, a modern adaptation of three HP Lovecraft stories, interwoven and modernised in the style of a podcast that explores mysteries. one of the main locations used in this series is Suffolk, which is where the second season of the show takes place and where major events unfold leading up to the final confrontation, set in a fictional town between Orford and Rendlesham. It combines elements of classic Lovecraftian horror with the eerie East Anglian landscape and the folklore that goes with it.

Within the show, they combine conspiracy theories, East Anglian folklore and Lovecraft stories. They relate the Rendlesham Forest incident to rituals performed by the New Forest Coven. The show suggests that a Lovecraftian character, Alhazred, journeyed to the middle east to try to discover the location of the Necronomicon. There, it is suggested he found a race of elder beings beneath the earth, more advanced than modern humans. He discovered that he could communicate with these beings through a ritual from any location, without having to revisit the place he found them. Nyarlathotep is said to be the spawn of azathoth, who was created to become an avatar for the latter, because in Lovecraftian lore the universe is all a part of Azathoth's dream, and therefore to experience the universe for himself he creates Nyarlathotep, who can come to earth and summon Azathoth himself to join him using ritual. It also suggests that LAM, the drawing done by famous occultist Alistair Crowley, is a drawing of the elder beings discovered by Alhazred, and by extension that both these things are simply avatars of Azathoth himself. It theorises that the Necronomicon finds it's way out of the middle east, into europe and to England, specifically to Dunwich, which at the time was one of the biggest ports in england. (now lost to the sea, as is written about in my research.) There it is said to have been picked up by Witches in the area, and it is suggested that they were trying to perform rituals to summon Azathoth, and this is how so many strange and otherworldy events started happening in suffolk- because these failed rituals could have summoned lesser evil beings.
